Discussions > Huckabee v. McCain Debate -- the next level!! PASS IT ON - http://mustdebate.com
Huckabee Nation,
We have a lift off !! At over 10,000 signatures for our petition, we have reached a critical mass of credibility. We next need to move this out to the general public very quickly. To do this, we are going to rely on you to complete the Action steps below. Remember that every minute counts at this point. Procrastination will kill the moment and may cost us the election -- a fate none of us wants to contemplate given the alternatives. So you are very important . Of course, there are a few more things we are doing to assure our success, but, as you might guess, some cannot be disclosed. Together, we will hit our target.
I have been a lobbyist for family values in Kentucky for several years. Someone once said, politicians understand two things: money and votes. This is largely true. Our attempt to get a debate sponsored has to include a respectful pressure on the Republican Party apparatus by those who are in Ohio - voters. To this end, I will be contacting my conservative leadership contacts in Ohio to see if they will help generate a little friendly heat. What does McCain have to lose if he does not prove his credentials to conservatives? A vast amount of help. Why is Ohio a good state to emphasize this? Because Ohio has been a pivotal state for Republicans in the past few elections. A few percentage points of low voter turnout by Republicans could easily cost McCain the election. Who has turned out the election in Ohio? Conservative Republicans. So, Sen. McCain needs us . If he avoids or shuns us, it will cost him the election. Period. No matter how much money McCain has, no matter how much "momentum" he has -- he understands he needs Ohio. Our goal is to show him the wisdom of debating and winning over conservatives, if that is possible. (We, on the other hand, believe our candidate will do just fine in this environment!)
I am currently working some back channels to arrange for media coverage and support. Please pray for me and others who are doing similar work. From my Christian perspective, "Can I ask that this operation be thoroughly covered with prayer. This is going to be the key."

ACTION STEPS
1) Our next step will be to have Ohio voters call their local Republican party members and remind them that they need to serve the election process first. We will see if we can get our contacts in Ohio to provide numbers and/or contact their own people in Ohio. If I get a list, I will make it available to Ohio Huckabee supporters. If you live in Ohio, you need to contact your county Republican Party and let that message work its way back up to the Ohio Republican HQ . Enough pressure, gentlle reminders that you are a voter and expect respect for your conservative views, will have an effect. The Ohio Republican Party will respond by seeking debate coverage OR risk alienating constituents - its own voters. The Party understands this message and this technique gets results so long as you are respectful.
2) What can Huckabee supporters from across the country do? 1) Call Dr. Dobson to let him know of your interest. I can assure you that he will be contacted through back channels, but it would be good for him to know that we are serious. Please be respectful. To relay a message to Dr. Dobson, contact Focus on the Family at: toll free phone number is (800) A-FAMILY (232-6459). The toll line is (719) 531-5181 A good outpouing of support might be helpful here. Dr. Dobson has already endorsed Gov. Huckabee. 2) contact talk show hosts who have at least shown a luke warmness to our cause : Michael Medved and recently Sean Hannity, others if you can think of them. Emphasize that we believe a debate would help galvanize the Party around a candidate, but only if the entire Party can be persuaded that they will be represented. A debate is the forum to ask the tough questions that Party faithful want to know. Michael Medved's number is 1-800-955-1776. His email is http://www.michaelmedved.com/contactus;jsessionid=78E2CE8DBF514AA3E... . Sean Hannity's number is [number removed]. His email is http://www.hannity.com/contactus.asp
3) What else can Huckabee supporters from across the country do? Respectfully ask the John McCain campaign to debate before the Ohio elections. The McCain Campaign needs to know that Huckabee supporters and others are not going to just roll over. If McCain is successful in obtaining the nomination, will he do it at the cost of alienating the Republican base? We expect to see and hear John McCain's new found conservatism. We want it tested in a debate. Politely ask John McCain's staff: Will you please ask Sen. McCain to respond to a request for a debate between himself and Gov. Mike Huckabee . The McCain Campaign number is (866) 775-2008. Their other listed number is (703) 418-2008.
4) Anything else? Keep forwarding this debate petition to everyone you know!! http://mustdebate.com

Note: Some have noted the McCain advertising on the petition itself. Here is my response:
It is a free online host for online petitions. In the Internet world, advertising pops up in the oddest places. The host provider supplements their income by selling space to (I think) Google ads. My guess is that McCain people bought ads for everything attached to either "Huckabee" or "McCain" -- these were the only two tags besides the word "debate". Its ironic, I'll grant you that.
But really it makes it more to the point and demonstrates what is going on. McCain is willing to spend vast amounts of money promoting himself without actually facing the public or his opposition -- a perfct example of why we must demand a debate and not settle for this demonstable cowardice. Does he think he'll be able to hide in the Fall?
I think you'll notice the same thing if you'll look at YouTube advertising and other sites where it seems out of place. I think it is a kind of intimidation/bullying tactic. Fits the pattern of not debating, huh?
No worries. I just think it makes me a little more angry every time I see it.
