    One of our South Jersey Members already sent his letter:
     
    To the Editor:
    As a member for many years, I take umbrage with Mr. Wright's description of the John Birch Society.  In his letter to the Editor, chastising the Gazette for announcing a Birch Society educational event, Mr. Wright described the JBS as:
    1) "xenophobic" meaning unduly fearful of strangers.  He could have said we strongly favor securing our borders in an effort to reduce the ever escalating burden illegal immigration is putting on our hospitals, prisons, schools, health, safety, etc. 
    2)  "isolationist organization".  He could have said we strongly favor America remaining independent as George Washington warned in his farewell address, "Beware of entangling alliances" such as NAFTA which has cost Americans millions of jobs due to American industries closing down and re-opening in Mexico, China, and elsewhere.  NAFTA is being expanded into a North American Union that will cost America her independence if decent people neglect vigilance and do not get informed.
    3)  "gun nuts".   We believe the founding fathers knew what they were doing when they put the Second Amendment in our sacred Bill of Rights.  We are not naive but rather feel responsibility to our families and our nation.  If we are gun nuts, then so are those few remaining free populations of the world. 
    4)  "advocate withdrawal from the United Nations".  Since its founding, the history of the UN is a panorama of blood and betrayal.  Here again, one only needs to make the effort to get the facts behind the public relations facade.
    5)  "oppose public education".  There is no constitutional authorization for the government to be in the business of education.  We support the Constitution and are opposed to indoctrination.  Example: Ask any public school graduate what form of government we have in America and they will either have a blank look or answer, "Democracy."  Yet we pledge allegiance to a "Republic".  Think about it.
    6)  "hate mongering"  We hate no one.  Over the years, we have been called "anti-Semitic" which label deeply offends our Jewish members.  We have been called "racists" which offends our Black, Hispanic, American-Indian, and Asian members, etc.
    7)  "right wing".  If Mr. Wright means by "right wing" we favor anarchy, he is badly mistaken.  We believe that the functions of government should be limited to the boundaries set by the founding fathers in our remarkable U.S. Constitution.
    8)  "Bible thumping blot on the body politic".  As to "Bible thumping," I cannot speak for other members of JBS but only for myself.  The matter of one's personal devotion to the Creator is just that ...  a personal matter.  Individual members are free to voice their beliefs or dis-beliefs on religious matters as is still their right under the First Amendment of the Constitution.  The John Birch Society is not a religious organization, but rather an educational one.  What the members have in common, is a love and commitment to the priceless heritage of freedom we have inherited from America's far-sighted God-fearing founders. 
    I would like to personally invite Mr. Wright, who is obviously passionate enough about what he believes to write a letter to the editor, to visit the JBS web-site at www.jbs.org to see first hand what fruit this tree bears.

    It will of course be handled here locally in that MANY of our chapter members will be submitting responses.  However, I would like a "flood" of letters to hit the paper for a few reasons; 1) The editor is reasonably "friendly" to our message and cause and he will publish all these letters in the local paper - giving us tremendous exposure for the next several weeks; 2) I hope it will inspire the paper to actually send a reporter (only twice has this happened in the past) to our next meeting.  We had nearly 40 people show up to our screening of "The Real Face of the EU" on 3/6.  I hope to equal or better that mark on 4/3.  I would love to see a front page story including a picture of a packed room watching "NAU: Fact or Fiction."

       Congratulations on the smear.  It is always fun to rebut such nonsense.  I would be glad to write a response but it is probably best handled locally.  I would make sure that you use mentione the website.  You may also mention that the paper has been running ou news releases for quite some time and as far as our ideas, thousands of people in the region sem to agree with us because they happily sign our petitions to stop illegal immigration, repela NAFTA etc.  I would say that we don't advocate abolishing public schools.  Just federal control of them and that we do indeed, support the gowing home school movement that is proof that many thousands of Americans agree with us on our poistion on education.  Indeed, a good percentage of public school teachers send their children to private schools.
