Who should join
Freelancers Union Alliance?
People who organize
or want to organize a group of independent workers.
Maybe you hold a monthly networking event. Maybe you're trying to obtain a
shared workspace or get a group discount on supplies. Maybe you just want to
get out of the house and socialize with other people like you. This is the
place where independent workers get together to learn from one another, support
each other, and build something bigger.
Are
only organizations registered at Meetup.com eligible to join the Alliance?
No. If you organize
a group of independent workers, you’re invited to join. That includes groups on Yahoo!, Google,
MySpace, Facebook, etc. In-person groups
that don’t use any online platform are also invited to join.
What will I get out
of it?
Get new ideas. Share
resources. Coordinate activities. Some of our best ideas grow out of collaboration. Having trouble
getting people to come to your monthly meetings? Maybe another organizer
discovered the perfect recruitment tool. Want to learn more about tax
preparation or how to incorporate? Use the Alliance to team up with other local groups to sponsor a regular speaker
series. Help us build the national
movement of independent workers.
What if I'm not part of a group?
Start one! The members of the Alliance and Freelancers Union staff will help you get off the ground. If you’re not sure where to start, Freelancers Union sponsors local
groups on Meetup.com. Once you start
a group, we’ll help you strengthen and grow over time. You could also look for groups that already
exist, and join them. Check out the main page of Freelancers
Union Alliance for a list of local groups.
What is Freelancers Union?
Freelancers Union is
a national membership organization that represents the needs and concerns of America’s
growing independent workforce through advocacy, information and service. Freelancers Union
exists because we believe that freelancers can help each other. Together, we will build a national network of independent
workers that stretches across the country.

What
is an independent worker?
Independent workers
are freelancers, consultants,
independent contractors, temps, part-timers, contingent employees and the
self-employed. They currently make up about 30% of the nation’s
workforce. Independent workers are
largely disconnected from the employer-based
system of benefits and workplace protections.
Check out our Issues
page for a more complete look at the needs and concerns of independent workers.
